Thanksgiving

Well, we survived! It was a lot of work, but Miss Chef pulled it off (with a little help from yours truly of course...and several other hands in the soup).

So, before the pictures, the menu:

Hors d'oeuvres
Fruit & cheese platter: chèvre, aged goat's milk, smoked Gouda, brie, garlic & herb, mustard & ale cheddar
Charcuterie platter: pâté w/dried fruits, 2 kinds of French-style saucisson, prosciutto, pancetta

Dinner
Roasted free-range turkey and gravy
Sage dressing
Cornbread dressing with sausage and roasted chestnuts
Cranberry sauce
Mashed potatoes (nothing fancy, just good)
Pan-roasted sweet potatoes
Green bean casserole
Shaved brussels sprouts with brown butter & lemon
Sautéed mushrooms with green onion & herbs
Corn
Tossed green salad
Assorted dinner rolls
Sticky buns

Dessert
Apple pie
Pumpkin pie
Pecan pie
Peanut-butter pie
Jello salad

Although we lost an element in the oven halfway through the day (why do these things always happen on Thanksgiving??), and the turkey took an extra two hours to finish, it was indeed delicious. Last year we'd bought a natural turkey through EarthFare, and it was very tough. This one wasn't tough at all, and the flavor was amazing; a far cry from the bland stuff that we usually get. The dark meat especially was like a whole different...bird.

Well, we have a lot of furniture re-arranging to do today, so I'll let you enjoy this short slideshow of yesterday's events. I should warn you that, other than the turkey, I didn't really get many pictures of the food; I was a little busy when it started hitting the plates!

Hope you all had a chance to sit down and enjoy a meal with the ones you love.

  2. Lovely slide show! It was like having Thanksgiving Day again. What a wonderful celebration of friends and family.

I spent mine at my daughter's and SIL's house, holding my brand new baby grandson!!! The best TG ever!!!

  3. The menu list was certainly stunning, but I wanted more photo's! :-) Looks like you had a nice gathering, and yes, we watched the dog show too. I hope Rosie got plenty of goodies.

I do like my tater salad with a good mustardy taste to it but also the yolks from my girls are a deep orange.

  4. Oh man!! I knew I should have driven all those hours to arrive, uninvited, at your house!!! Man oh man!! We would have eaten so much better! Our meal was... disappointing. I plan to make our own Thanksgiving dinner to Jeff's specifications on Sunday when we have tree trimming day...

Loved the slide show. The pic of Rosie and seeing more of Miss Chef were my faves!!

  5. Wow, what a spread! We worked in the barn all day and had leftover lasagna from the day before for our hasty TG supper. Hopefully I'll have more time to do something inspired for Christmas instead.

I love, love, love those oval white serving dishes you have. Gorgeous!

  6. Oh Flartus, honey! The spread, the spread!

I just hope you took up a collection for all that food. It must have set you back a King's ransom! Just the cheese alone is a fortune, I know.

I loved the Smilebox and really felt like I was there! That's my favorite part about blogging. Being invited to step inside and enjoy someone's life, even if vicariously.

I need to get my Thanksgiving photos up and running too, but it's been busy around Casa Hice.

PS: If you and MC haven't heard of Rouxbe.com, I strongly urge you to check it out. It's a pay cooking site, but a lovely one. I bought a lifetime membership back when I was working and am glad I did. Couldn't afford it now. You can sign up for a free trial membership and see if it's up your alley or not. I made Garlic and Prosciutto baked Brussels Sprouts in a Parmesan and Thyme Mornay Sauce for Thanksgiving and it was amazing. Got the recipe off the Rouxbe site.

And last but not least.... who did all the dishes?

  7. Wow, what a menu! Somehow I feel jipped. Even though I ate so much I had to be carried home in the bucket of a tractor (jk!).

So, is there a seat available for me at your next holiday shin-dig? :D
